Teaching Academic Vocabulary in Social Studies

This research-based pedagogy guide is designed to assist educators in the development of best practices for vocabulary instruction in the social studies classroom. The Companion Guide for Vocabulary provides instructional methods for increasing social studies content knowledge through the use of retrieval practice, collaborative learning, spaced learning, and metacognition. These strategies are effective whether a teacher is using Region 4 resources or any other high-quality instructional materials. This will be a print book focused on teacher use with online, downloadable forms provided through the R4Hub. Edit-able templates will enhance teachers’ abilities to customize this for their classroom.
